Before the Storm
When a hurricane or tropical storm is heading our way, your HVAC system needs attention as part of your storm prep checklist.
Turn off your system at the breaker. Power surges during and after storms are the number one killer of HVAC equipment. Shut it off at the main breaker panel before the storm arrives.
Secure your outdoor unit. While most condenser units are heavy enough to stay put in moderate winds, consider installing hurricane straps if you are in a high-wind zone. Remove any loose debris, patio furniture, or objects that could become projectiles near the unit.
Cover the unit only with a breathable tarp — never use plastic wrap, which traps moisture and promotes corrosion.
Clear your drain lines. Heavy rains can overwhelm drainage. Make sure your condensate drain is clear before the storm.
After the Storm
Do not turn your system on immediately. Wait until floodwaters recede and allow the unit to dry. Inspect for visible damage, debris, and standing water around the unit.
Check for damage. Look for bent condenser fins, shifted refrigerant lines, water inside the air handler, and any debris lodged in the outdoor unit.
Call a professional before restarting. A post-storm inspection can prevent costly damage from running a compromised system. We offer priority post-hurricane inspections for our Cool Club members.
Check your ductwork. If water entered your home, moisture may have gotten into your ducts. Mold can start growing within 24-48 hours in Gulf Coast heat.
