Warning Signs to Watch For
Gulf Coast summers push A/C systems to their limits. Here are the signs your system is losing the battle.
1. It runs constantly but never reaches the set temperature. On the hottest days (95°F+), your system should still cycle off periodically. If it runs nonstop, it may be undersized, low on refrigerant, or have a failing compressor.
2. Your energy bills are climbing. Compare this summer to last summer. If your bills are significantly higher with the same usage patterns, your system is losing efficiency. Systems lose about 5% efficiency per year without maintenance.
3. Strange noises. Grinding, squealing, or banging sounds indicate mechanical problems — worn bearings, loose components, or a failing motor. Do not ignore these; they get worse and more expensive fast.
4. Uneven cooling. If some rooms are freezing while others are warm, you may have ductwork issues, a failing blower motor, or a system that is improperly sized for your home.
5. Frequent repairs. If you have called for repair service more than twice in the past year, the repair costs are adding up. At some point, replacement is the smarter financial decision.
6. Your system is 10+ years old. Modern systems are dramatically more efficient than units made even 10 years ago. A new high-efficiency system can cut your cooling costs by 30-50%.
7. It uses R-22 refrigerant (Freon). R-22 was phased out in 2020. If your system still uses it, refrigerant costs are skyrocketing and replacement parts are getting scarce. It is time to upgrade.
Repair vs. Replace
Our general rule: if the repair cost is more than 50% of a new system AND your unit is over 8 years old, replacement usually makes more financial sense. We offer free in-home consultations to help you evaluate your options — no pressure, just honest advice.
